No Ordinary Birthday

I’ve been working on this post in my head for quite some time now. It’s personal, emotional, and I couldn’t make up my mind if I wanted to share it publicly. But I realized once I saw the pictures that I needed to share this. There’s so much love and happiness in these pictures. I hope it will inspire someone going through similar tough times to always look for the bright spots on the horizon.

This is my friend best friend and her beautiful family. When we took these family photos she had just found out that she has breast cancer. She was still going through the shock of it all and in the midst of determining treatment options. She didn’t know any of the details of her type of breast cancer yet, how advanced, all of that.

Naturally, I kind of had to convince her to do this photo shoot. Right now, not later. Right now. I wanted her to have a concrete picture of her family, the people she loves, the people she will take the fight of her life on for. I wanted her to see how beautiful and strong she is. That SHE CAN DO this. I was hoping it would help her in her journey through the endless tests and doctor appointments, the chemo treatments, surgery.

We did this shoot on their land that they are planning on building their new dream house on. The plans may have slowed down a bit due to her diagnosis but just like that cancer fight, they are not loosing sight of their end goal. We had a beautiful sunny winter evening so a little picnic, at the site their future home will stand, was in order 😉

More than a month into her treatments she beyond amazes me! She’s strong, determined and finds the positive in every situation. She endures all of the treatments with so much courage and never looses sight of the end goal. KICKING CANCER’S ASS! I have no doubt in my mind that she is going to succeed and come out of this stronger than before. Her determination and focus is amazing. She’s a rock star in my eyes!
She’s even created a little blog to share her journey. Check it out here.

She celebrated her 39th birthday today. A year ago it would have been a somewhat dreaded day. Another year closer, almost the big 40…But not anymore.

Today was a gift. Another year of experiences.

She’s not taking it for granted anymore. And we all shouldn’t. Her fight is a reminder how precious life is. That we need to celebrate every day we’ve been given.

I am thankful for the perspective this has given me. I won’t be dreading an upcoming birthday any more.

Party, people, PARTY!!

Michelle - I love the pictures you took of this sweet family and all the emotion and depth of love you captured. My son and her oldest daughter were in Kinder together and took some cooking classes too; a sweet family indeed! Praying for them through this journey knowing how BIG God is! He was faithful in bringing me through a similar journey a year ago. It’s never the path we’d pick for ourselves …. but He is THERE on the path holding us through it. Love that you decided to post about it.

Launch! {Austin Family Photographer}

Finally!! I know I’ve been hinting at this for months now and, if you are following me on my FB page, … well, you’ve already seen that I’ve recently made some big changes.

It’s been months in the making and I am finally ready to officially announce the launch of my new photography brand Tic Tac Toe Photography and with it, my new blogsite (Yep, it’s a blog and a website, all-in-one. Brilliant, right?).

Read all about why I changed names here. And check out our session special for the month here.

I will forever go and tweak things for the next couple of weeks and some galleries still need to be uploaded (Imagine having to go through 5 years worth of session images and picking your favorites!) so please track back soon and often! Did you know you can subscribe to the feed?

My goal is to make this site much more interactive, so comments, feedback and other random thoughts (preferably photography related) are always welcome. (Tell spammers to stay away though!)

So what’s going to happen to this site, you ask? It will become my personal blog (it already carries my name after all!) and a way to share some thoughts, experiences and of course pictures of my own family.

So what are you waiting for, head on over to my new site and check it out!

Austin Kid's Directory - Very nice Heike! Love the new name and look and enjoyed reading the story behind it.

Bubble Bath Fun {Austin Family Photographer}

This was J. second baby steps session and I think he was almost 9 months. What a perfect age to take him out to a park. His big brother really got into it too when we pulled the “pretend” bathtub out and both little J. and mom had to withstand several bubble gun attacks.

Always so lovely to see this family, I’ve been photographing the kids since big brother was born!

Kristen - O’dell family, you win the “seriously cute” title for family pics (and you look fab Jen!)

A day at the park {Austin Family Photographer}

I’ve promised I would post a sneak peek from this session so here it is!

I had a blast spending time with these guys. Little M. recently turned the big One so we met at Zilker, despite the heat and having to meet so early in the morning, I think they really had fun! What’s not to laugh though when there’s popsicles and splashing around in the creek is on the agenda 😉

Mommy & Me Minis {Austin Family Photographer}

Oh my, Mother’s Day is less than a week away! Give mom something meaningful that will last forever (definitely a lot longer than a bouquet of flowers ;-))

Get a gift certificate today for one of our Mommy & Me mini sessions and have mom step in front of the camera for a change, with her children. Is there a better way to tell her how much she means to all of you? I don’t think so.
